Restoring the oldest type of sound recorder & player in history AND making new records

In this video, I show how I refurbished an original sound recording and reproducing machine from over 100 years ago - an Edison Home Phonograph. I then go on to attempt to make recordings in a way that duplicates the very first technology used to do so, using a wax cylinder and a live performer. This rugged machine, 109 years old, now performs as well as it did when it was first made. Watch me bring it back to its presentable original state, and trace my path of discovery to make it work well enough to record new cylinders. I felt a thrill when I first heard my recorded voice, reproduced by purely mechanical means, and it was clear and recognizable. Can you imagine a world in which there was no recorded music, no radio, no television? How quiet life must have been in the late 1800's. Along came the American inventor Thomas Edison, with an all-new invention that captured sound and could then reproduce that sound, over and over. So began the recording industry, and the entertainment and edification of millions of people.
