Morin, M.D.. Board certification is one of the most important considerations when choosing a plastic surgeon. The act of board certification has many different requirements and every medical specialty has its own board. So within plastic surgery, there is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In order to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, one has to fulfill many different requirements. I'm going to explain the requirements that I had to fulfill in order to become board certified. I had to be trained for three years in general surgery, I then had to be trained for two years in plastic surgery. I then personally did a one year craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery fellowship. During that time, I took a two day written examination on a computer. And then, after practicing surgery for a period of one year, I flew to Arizona to take a three day oral examination based on surgeries that I had performed in the past year. So, the requirements for board certification are very rigorous, and therefore, when someone says that they are board certified, and specifically, board certified in the specialty that you are in considering, and in this case plastic surgery, it's meaningful because the surgeon had to fulfill many requirements and had to be evaluated by very good surgeons. So, board certification is very important. You should always ask any of your doctors whether or not they're board certified, and assuming they say yes, they are board certified, you should follow that up with the question of, what board are you certified by? There are many boards, and within plastic surgery, the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board that certifies plastic surgeons.
