A new groundbreaking discovery makes looking for life on Jupiter's moon ‘Europa’ a possibility

Jupiter is the largest and oldest planet in our solar system. Formed from the dust and gases left over from the Sun's formation 4.6 billion years ago. While Jupiter’s environment is probably not conducive to life as we know it the same is not true of some of its 95 moons. The moon Europa is actually one of the likeliest places to find life elsewhere in our solar system since there is evidence of a vast ocean just beneath its icy crust, where life could possibly be supported. However, a landing mission to search for life has not been believed to be possible due to extreme radiation levels. Radiation that would destroy a vessel within days. New and groundbreaking results from the Juno missions now show that the radiation on one side of Europe is almost nonexistent. DTU has supplied equipment for the mission in the form of star cameras, which provide very precise data on the vessel’s orientation in space. Researchers on NASA's Juno mission have used images from DTU's star camera to map high-energy radiation at Jupiter's moon Europa and find surprisingly low radiation at the back of the moon's slipstream.
