Calcutta High Court Voids OBC Certificates in Major Verdict, Sparks Political Firestorm!

On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court dismissed all Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates issued in West Bengal since 2010. A division bench, comprising Justice Tapabrata Chakrabirty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, ruled the certificates as "illegal." The judgment came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the process of granting OBC certificates. The court ordered a new list of OBCs to be created based on the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes Act of 1993. Sections of the 2012 West Bengal Backward Classes Act were struck down as unconstitutional. The court clarified that the order would not affect those already in service or who have benefited from the certificates issued before 2010. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly opposed the ruling, calling it a "kalankit chapter" and blaming the BJP for the decision. She emphasized that OBC reservation would continue in the state. In contrast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the verdict, accusing Banerjee of manipulating reservations for vote bank politics. He criticized her for allegedly granting OBC status to 118 Muslim castes without proper surveys.
