The YF-23 is an experimental American stealth fighter aircraft developed by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas in the late 1980s. Created for the United States Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, the YF-23 was intended to compete directly with the YF-22 (later the F-22 Raptor). The YF-23 featured an advanced aerodynamic design with a unique shape, a V-tail, and high stealth capabilities, making it difficult to detect by radar. The aircraft was notable for its supersonic cruise speed without the use of afterburners and its ability to fly high, as well as its reduced infrared signature. However, despite its stealth and good flight performance, the YF-23 lacked some of the YF-22's versatility, especially in its high maneuverability in air-to-air combat. Ultimately, the YF-23 was not selected, and the US Air Force decided to select the YF-22 to develop into the F-22.
