Well, with new apps popping up like Thursday, which focuses on IRL dating, maybe the traditional way of swiping through apps is on its way out. But Hinge and Tinder are still incredibly popular and as of 2021, Tinder was downloaded over 450 million times. And with half of its users being Gen Z, we’re not really seeing a generational drop-off in downloads. But what is interesting is that only 29% of users have EVER met up with a match. And research from Dutch Tinder users found that many use the app for validation of their own attractiveness or for the thrill of receiving a match. Which means to actually get a date, apps like Tinder and Hinge might not be your best bet. Let’s go back to Thursday for a minute. The app only operates once a week in a push to get people to meet up in person, and it hosts meet-ups in London & New York. And Thursday is just one drop in a new wave of dating experiences, like Bumble’s ‘Bumble Brew’, a café and wine bar designed for in-person dates. And Match.com’s upcoming feature ‘Meet’ which they say will encourage IRL dating without the “traditional loop of sending likes and waiting for matches”. So if this is the future of dating apps, do you think it’s a good thing?
