These fractures often occur in association with distal radius fractures (another common wrist injury), especially from falls onto an outstretched hand. Types of Ulna Styloid Fractures: 1. Stable Fractures: Often small fractures that do not significantly affect wrist function. 2. Unstable Fractures: Larger fractures that may involve damage to surrounding ligaments, such as the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), which is crucial for wrist stability. Symptoms: Pain and tenderness at the ulnar side of the wrist. Swelling and bruising. Limited wrist movement or difficulty with gripping. Clicking or instability of the wrist if ligaments are involved. Diagnosis: X-rays: Standard imaging to confirm the fracture and evaluate its alignment. MRI/CT scans: May be required to assess associated soft tissue injuries, particularly involving the TFCC. Treatment: Conservative Management (for stable fractures): Rest, immobilization with a splint or cast, and physical therapy. Surgical Intervention (for unstable fractures): May involve internal fixation to stabilize the fracture and repair any associated ligament injuries. Recover: Typically takes 6-8 weeks for bone healing, depending on the severity and treatment. Physical therapy may be needed to restore full range of motion and strength.
