Shape Memory Alloys

This unsuspecting little spring was gifted to me by my friend and former colleague, on the last day of our previous job. A nice pub trick but an excellent example of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). These alloys can deform but they ‘remember’ their original shape and can return to it usually upon the application of heat. Most commonly a mixture of Nickel and Titanium, they are ‘trained’ to remember the original shape by taking advantage of the different phases (martensite and austenite).
