In which yr hmbl svt demonstrates his new Epson P-40 thermal printer. The printer is an achingly slow receipt printer, which works by heating specially treated paper, making it go black. It supports about 140 DPI horizontally and 72 DPI vertically, and uses the same motor to move the head and the paper; the weird motions as it does line feeds is it bumping a cam to make the paper move. Both the printer and the paper date from 1984 (and both work fine). It's normally battery powered but I've modified it to run off an external 5V supply. (It won't run from its normal AC charger socket; it consumes about 2A.) This was surprisingly hard to make. The printer speed 4800 baud 8O2 serial with 'invalid' parity (whatever that means) and DSR/DTR handshaking, and Linux doesn't appear to support this. I eventually had to use the Epson PX-8 laptop the printer was intended for as a host. I transferred the file from my desktop PC to the PX-8 using a different serial cable, and the PIPped it from the PX-8's ramdisk to the printer. No, I don't know why it insists on printing graphics in multiple passes. I'm sending the data in a single chunk and it's doing that itself. Other Epson printers don't do that.
