What is the difference between a single stage, two stage and variable refrigerant flow air conditioners, how are they sized, and how do they dehumidify? A single stage compressor has a single speed. It is either off or cooling at max capacity and fan speed. The advantage of this system is its low cost, but the disadvantages are the difficulty in proper sizing, resulting in either underperformance or short cycling, and temperature swings as the unit cycles on and off. A two stage compressor has two speeds for both the compressor and fans. It can switch between off, low and high depending on the heat load. Sizing becomes slightly easier with these units as they have more ability to match their output to the demand, but oversizing and short cycling are still a concern, especially as houses are better insulated and built tighter. They cost significantly more than single stage units, and their higher efficiency ratings are rarely realized in application. A variable refrigerant flow system is able to adjust it's output from around 20% to 100% in as little as 1% increments. This allows a system to run at it's optimum setting to maintain a even temperature through the home. Because it is running more of the time, it avoids the tremendous power consumption required at start up, improving efficiency as well as gaining the ability to more effectively dehumidify. However, in the hot, humid south, a separate whole home dehumidifier is recommended regardless of the AC system. A separate dehumidifier can concentrate on only maintaining humidity levels, and the AC can concentrate on only maintaining temperature.
