What do you do when you discover MOLD in your gouache? It was a first for me and I had to do a little research to find out what others had done. I created this palette so I could use gouache more like watercolor and wet the paints to reconstitute them and then paint. However, keeping them moist allows me to use them more like oil paints where I take some of the color from the palette and mix in on a different surface. Some artists suggest using gouache straight out of the tube, but when I am traveling, I like to have it already poured out. Using the gouache more often will help avoid mold. IMPORTANT UPDATE - GOT THIS FROM A VIEWER, Heather Simmons Oil of Cloves is the solution to mold. Wipe the underside of the lid with a few drops of Oil of Cloves before you close it and it will say mold-free for months. I have the same palette box and got this tip from Lena Rivo's YouTube channel...really works a treat! THANK YOU, Heather, I'm going to get some Oil of Cloves ASAP! One of the videos I watched showed an artist adding alcohol to the gouache and stirring it up. I would hesitate to recommend that without testing it further. I think the alcohol would alter the chemical makeup of the paint. What do you think? Have you ever had that problem?
