St. Joseph the Hesychast, officially recognized as a saint by the Patriarchate of Constantinople in November 2019, can be singlehandedly credited with the renewal of monasticism on Mount Athos, as his spiritual children became abbots in the main monasteries and attracted young men to monasticism giving new life to the abandoned monasteries of the Holy Mountain. His spiritual son, Fr. Ephraim of Arizona, has established 18 monasteries in the United States and Canada, bringing Athonite style monasticism to the New World. Fr.
