Great Benjamins Circus Comes to Cleveland

BEREA, OH — The Great Benjamins Circus has arrived at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea for a weekend full of excitement, offering audiences a blend of international artistry and traditional circus charm. With performances running until the 22nd, this family-run circus promises 90 minutes of non-stop energy, featuring acts from around the world. John Davenport, a third-generation circus performer, co-founded the Great Benjamins Circus with his brother Jairo. Their mission is to deliver a culturally enriching and respectful circus experience. The circus travels far and wide across North America, from Florida to California, and even as far north as Alaska and Newfoundland/Labrador; and now finds itself in Northeast Ohio, ready to captivate audiences of all ages. Eva Rodriguez, Director of Operations for the Great Benjamins Circus, took a moment before today's show to talk with Cleveland 13 contributor Delani Young to discuss her passion for circus performance. “I've always loved art and movement and sharing that with people around me, so it was pretty easy to do this job,” she said. Having been involved in circus work for 15 years, Eva now performs one of the most daring acts in the show. “One of the acts I do, that's in the show right now, it's called the Great American Cyclone,” she explained. “It's basically an aerial act and it's two aerialists, myself and another woman, and we're basically suspended from a motorcycle at the top of the tent, and that's pretty crazy.” When asked about her childhood aspirations, Eva shared that circus life had always been a dream. "Ever since I was little, this is what I wanted to do," she said. While the Great Benjamins Circus focuses solely on human performances today, its roots trace back to a time when animal acts were a staple of the circus world. The Davenports’ legacy began with Benjamin C. Davenport, who owned the Dailey Bros. Circus in the mid-20th century, a large traveling show that featured a wide array of animals, including elephants and camels. This was common practice in that era, as animal acts were a significant part of the entertainment landscape. However, as times and attitudes toward animal welfare evolved, so did the circus industry. The Great Benjamins Circus has embraced these changes, now delivering an all-human performance that continues to awe audiences without the use of animals. When asked about how these changes impacted their circus, Eva said, “It hasn't impacted us at all. Things change and that's normal. We have an incredible cast of humans that do incredible stunts and acts, so that's okay.” The Great Benjamins Circus features a diverse lineup of clowns, acrobats, aerialists, and daredevils from across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Their performances are designed to entertain both children and adults, creating an unforgettable family experience. Eva also spoke about her motivation to continue performing, offering insight to younger fans. “I guess the motivation comes from within, really,” she said. “Finding what you love and just doing it, that's really what it is.” In addition to their Cleveland performances, the circus recently completed shows in Texas and Canada, with many more planned across the country. They encourage fans to follow them on social media and purchase tickets while they're still available. The Great Benjamins Circus will be performing at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds until September 22. Tickets can be purchased online.
