Derwent Tinted Charcoal Paint Pan Set Tests: Swatches: SEems to take a LOT of scrubbing to get something approaching a saturated color. Not NEARLY as dark as the swatches, but you can actually see some color to them (Inktense? that would make it somewhat indelible). They're still moody and kinda pretty, I just wish their darker tones had more oomph to them. Maybe I'm doing this wrong? These definitely seem like they're Inktense + a little charcoal- I wonder why they're so hard to activate. Opacity Swatch Test: Some of these definitely seem to have a bit of opacity to them, and stand out on the black line, rather than blending in. That points to the inclusion of Inktense, since Inktense has a tendency to be kidna opaque. Cheaper Paper: Brushstrokes, especially with a lighter wash, are really apparent, so you might want to use a mop or something after mixing your paint. Layering: One of the challenges of layering is actually getting the paint dark enough for you to notice that you did another layer. And there's enough opacity that it sorta obscures past layers, particularly if you're using a different color. I really want to like these, because I really like the idea of paint+charcoal with the properties of charcoal, but these are just so lacking in the charcoal department. Color on color they don't really layer well due to the opacity of the inktense- you cant get glazes, so you have to work strategically or monochromatically. And I can't get the saturation, so it's challenging to build up paint and get any impact. Maybe I got a bad set? It sorta seems like prior layers start scraping off as well, could just be a cellulose thing. I'm going to allow this to dry for 12 hours before we move on to the next stages. Erasing: A little erasing, some colors are better than others Smudging: A little smudging, again some colors are better than others, if you have a set with a better charcoal load, you’re probably able to get more smudging effects. Wet into Wet: I just really can’t get any saturation out of these, I have to scrub and scrub, and it still comes out really light for charcoal. Since I currently can’t figure these out, and I wanna get some additional opinions and see what yall think, I’m going to hold the fieldtest for another video. The Verdict: So far, not so good. Other people’s experiences seem better, so I’m willing to hold my judgement and assume that possibly I’m handling them wrong, or that my paints degraded while they sat, but if this is how they handle, I really don’t understand why Derwent didn’t put more charcoal in these and less Inktense, because I want that depth! I want that drama!
