Cocoa butter: https://amzn.to/3tEyjVl $22.90 Lip balm tray/tubes: https://amzn.to/48BWgeC $20.95 (can purchase tubes in bulk for less) Coconut oil: https://amzn.to/3H1U6ti. $7.43 Zinc oxide: https://amzn.to/41FI2ap $14.99 Beeswax free for me, but roughly $1 per oz to purchase From Walmart: Shea butter: $10 Castor oil:$10 Vitamin E oil: $7 Olive and avocado oils: $25 Sun Coco oil: $10 Purchased supplies cost around $100, which would make many 50-tube batches, and many items, like the oils, I already had on hand for other uses. 50 x $5 avg. cost= 250 (my usual brand is often more) Lip balm tubes = 4.25g x 50 = 212.5g Basic Ratio Choose favorite oils and butters to make just a few tubes or a large batch * 1 part beeswax * 1 part cocoa butter/shea butter * 2 parts high-quality edible oil * Optional: vitamin E oil as a preservative * Note: amounts do not have to be precise, but very close. Use more oil for creamier, or less for firmer consistency. FULL BATCH (makes 50+ tubes) * 56 g beeswax * 28 g cocoa butter * 28 g shea butter * 28 g coconut oil * 28 g calendula infused olive oil * 28 g chamomile infused avocado oil * 28 g vanilla infused sunflower-coconut oil * 10 g castor oil * 5 g vitamin E oil (antioxidant/preservative) * Optional: essential oils, zinc oxide, mica tint powders Instructions 1. Measure all ingredients and gently melt beeswax and shea butter/cocoa butters and fats in a double boiler over medium heat. Add oils. Stir well and turn off the heat. If using, mix zinc oxide with a small bit of oil until it is a paste, then stir into main mixture until fully incorporated. I poured 40 tubes with plain lip balm base before adding zinc and tint. For every one percent of zinc oxide, it results in 1.6 SPF units. I estimated about 12% of the remaining lip balm base because some of the other ingredients, like the shea butter and the tint offer a bit of SPF. I was aiming for 20-30 SPF. I added the tint based on the color I wanted, rather than a specific amount. 2. Carefully  pour into empty lip balm containers or lip balm tubes using a lip balm filling tray. This must be done quickly before the mixture hardens. If the mixture should harden place measuring cup back into the double boiler water and heat up slowly while stirring the mixture. 3. Cool for an hour until mixture has completely hardened, then cap. ☀️Zinc oxide provides UV protection primarily via absorption of UV radiation and not through significant reflection or scattering. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26431.... ☀️ Zinc Oxide is ocean and coral reef safe. Non-nano zinc oxide is a biodegradable, mineral-based sunscreen. The term “non-nano” signifies particles larger than 100 nanometers, making them safer for marine life compared to “nano” particles, which are smaller than 100 nanometers. https://coral.org/en/blog/sunscreen-1...
