It is a combination of the English words ‘hip’ and ‘euljiro’. If you look at the participatory Korean dictionary operated by the National Institute of the Korean Language, ‘Urimalsam’, which is operated like Wikipedia, ‘hip-hop’ means “it is bright and fresh in the latest fashion while having its own personality and sense”. Uniqueness and fashion, that is, harmony between the old and the new is the key. There are few places that fit this meaning as well as Hipjiro. Unlike other 'hot places', there are academic papers demonstrating the process in which old stores and new stores have harmonized well. ‘Nogari Alley’ is a representative place of Hipjiro. When the sun goes down and you enter the alley from Exit 4 of Euljiro 3-ga Station on the subway, you will be surprised at the buzzing sound like a baseball field. The scenery overflowing with customers from alleyways to bars selling draft beer and Nogari even creates a surreal feeling. Although it is now a holy place for ‘newtro’ where young people enjoy retro and new, the original customers were the workers of small businesses such as printing houses. It is said that there are some people who left the printing house and opened a bar in another area with the same concept. The origin of Nogari Alley is ‘Euljio Bee Bear’, which opened in 1980. After that, nogari-specialized pubs started to set in, and the nogari alley was selected as a ‘Seoul Future Heritage’ in 2015. Euljio Be Bear, run by a second-generation couple, was also designated as a ‘centennial store’ by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in August 2018. However, the current Nogari Alley is not just made up of simple old-timers. ‘Manseon Hope’, which is most often introduced on Instagram, opened in 1983, and has been operating as a business since the owner changed 7 years ago.
