One of the most important American theatre composers of the early 20th century, he wrote more than 700 songs, used in over 100 stage works. Kern was born in New York City to Jewish immigrants, and over a span of 40 years, introduced many innovations to the musical theatre. Kern died of a stroke at the age of 60. "The Last Time I Saw Paris" was written in 1940 and was incorporated into the film "Lady Be Good" in 1941, which won the song an Academy Award for Best Original Song. This is a dreamy and nostalgic arrangement by Lee Evans. The last time I saw Paris Her heart was warm and gay I heard the laughter of her heart in every street cafe The last time I saw Paris Her trees were dressed for spring And lovers walked beneath those trees And birds found songs to sing I dodged the same old taxicabs That I had dodged for years The chorus of the squeaky horns Was music to my ears Oh the last time I saw Paris Her heart was warm and gay No matter how they changed her I'll remember her that way.
