Whistler-Blackcomb | Creekside Gondola [New 2022]

Creekside Gondola actually has an interesting history. The original gondola here started its life out in 1965, when Whistler Mountain first opened. It was a Mueller 4-passenger gondola, and it served the original base area, before the Whistler Village base existed. In 1972, another lift, called Olive Chair, was installed. It was a Murray-Latta double, and served as a backup to the gondola, adding some capacity. After having installed chairlifts from Yan, and having seen Blackcomb Mountain's detachable lifts, Whistler Mountain decided to install some detachable chairs themselves. In 1989, they installed Green Express, a Yan detachable quad. It worked out well, so in 1991, Whistler Mountain installed Redline Express and Quicksilver Express. Quicksilver replaced the gondola on the same alignment, and keeping Olive Chair. After only 5 years of operation, in 1995, Quicksilver Express had an emergency stop cause four chairs on the steepest section of the lift fall 30 feet, killing one person, and injuring 9 others. This incident would become one of the most tragic incidents involved with chairlifts in North America. The chair was promptly replaced the following summer in 1996 with another gondola, restoring gondola access up the Creekside base area. The gondola, called Creekside Gondola, was a Poma 6-passenger gondola, Whistler Mountain's fourth Poma install. It reused several of the Yan tower tubes, despite the incident, as many of them were still safe to use. The gondola served the base area well, but in recent years, especially once Vail Resorts acquired the now combined Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort, overcrowding caused increasingly long lines on the gondola. This, along with the fact the gondola was somewhat aging, prompted replacement of the old machine. In 2022, Creekside Gondola was replaced with a 10-passenger gondola, increasing capacity from 2370 PPH to 3200 PPH, a staggering 35% increase. Creekside Gondola is a Doppelmayr 10-passenger gondola. It is the fifth lift to run up this section of the mountain, and the third gondola to run on this alignment. Despite being four years apart, this lift is almost identical to Blackcomb Gondola, which serves Blackcomb's base area. The lift here uses UNI-G terminals, CWA Omega IV 10 LWI cabins, and has a line speed of 1200 FPM. What's unique about this install and the other new lift, Big Red 6 Express, is the use of full European towers, especially the tapered tower tubes. This is one of the first new installs to use Doppelmayr's tapered tower tube design. The predecessor gondola had a total of 24 towers, and this lift reduces that number by five, with 19 towers. Although crowding at Whistler-Blackcomb continues to be bad, this lift at least helps get people up and out of the Creekside base area, and reduces lines, with a much smoother and faster ride.
