Rory O'Donovan playing a Bacon & Day Banjo

Here is a a small clip of Rory O'Donovan playing a Bacon & Day banjo. (which we have for sale inside) The tunes are Banish Misfortune and Morrison's Jig. If I was in the basement of our old shop and I heard him play upstairs I would always know it was him. He has that distinct steady style. I love that he has to play a few tunes and off he goes again. Today was his first day in our new shop and he was delighted I am in a pub! Rory bought his first mandolin from my father in 1970 and within the same year his first banjo. The mandolin was handmade in Portugal and it cost him £16 and his banjo was a Framus which cost him £45. He was an apprentice electrician at the time on a wage of £12. He is the son of Joe and Siobhán O'Donovan. They were both great Irish speakers and Irish dancers and the last time they danced was in 2004 at The Willie Clancy Festival. They were well into their eighties. Fabulous people with the same grace and nature as my father and grandfather and probably all of ye'res too. Rory's grandfather was Michael O'Donovan who founded the Blackpool Step Dancing School in 1923. The same year as my grandfather founded Crowley's Music Centre. There is a lot of history between us but the reason I am posting this is because I feel as though we are loosing our traditional knowledge and it won't be long before we won't really know where we came from. This man Rory is like a walking encyclopedia or iPad of history so stop him in the street if you want to ask him about any place, family or piece of music. He is a wealth in himself! And he will probably bate me off a wall for saying this but shur it will be grand.
