Patras, 2021 "The House Carpenter" or "The Daemon Lover" is a Scottish ballad dating back to the late 17th century. It was used as a warning for married women to prevent them from indulging to temptations that would make them leave their families. In this particular story, the man (Temptation or the Devil) returns to his former lover (who is then married to a carpenter and has got a child with him) and tries to seduce her with his wealth in order to persuade her to follow him. The woman gives in to temptation, abandons her husband and child and follows him. However, during their journey, she begins to feel remorse for her choice to abandon her child. Then, according to this version, their ship sinks in rough seas. During their attempt to save themselves, they see in front of them two hills, one of Paradise and one of Hell. The illegitimate couple realizes that their destination is not Paradise, but Hell as a consequence of their sin...
