Fluency refers to continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort in speech production. All speakers are disfluent at times. They may hesitate when speaking, use fillers (“like” or “uh”), or repeat a word or phrase. These are called typical disfluencies or nonfluencies. Speech Fluency is a term used in Speech Pathology that describes sounds, syllables, words and phrases when joined together. There are various forms of fluency, whether referred to speaking another language, reading, or singing. Speech fluency adheres to an individual's ability to speak smoothly and easily. A fluency disorder can be diagnosed by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). An SLP will ask about your medical history and listen to you speak. The SLP may do an oral-mechanism exam and testing of speech-language skills. Once you are diagnosed, an SLP can use exercises and strategies to help you speak more fluently. With multiple contributing factors, fluency disorder is a speech disorder that is characterized by sound prolongations, repetitions, and/or blockage of sounds, syllables, words, or phrases which disrupt the natural flow of speech. Text or passage reading fluency is generally defined as having three components: accuracy, rate, and prosody (or expression).
