Umananda Temple is a famous Shiva temple located on Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati, Assam. It is considered one of the smallest inhabited riverine islands in the world. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and its name "Umananda" comes from two Sanskrit words: "Uma" (another name for Goddess Parvati) and "Ananda" (meaning joy or happiness). Legend has it that Lord Shiva created this island for his wife, Goddess Parvati, to give her joy. The temple's architecture reflects a blend of Hindu artistic traditions, with intricate rock carvings of Hindu deities and motifs. Visitors can reach the island by ferry from the banks of the Brahmaputra, and the serene setting amidst the river adds to the spiritual ambiance of the site. The temple becomes especially vibrant during the festival of Maha Shivaratri, when devotees flock to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. The island also has a rich history, having been a site of cultural significance since the Ahom dynasty in Assam. উমানন্দ মন্দির (Umananda Temple) আসামের গৌহাটি শহরের ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদীর মাঝখানে অবস্থিত একটি ছোট দ্বীপের ওপর স্থাপিত একটি প্রাচীন হিন্দু মন্দির। এই দ্বীপটি উমানন্দ দ্বীপ (Umananda Island) নামে পরিচিত, যাকে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে ছোট নদী দ্বীপও বলা হয়। এই মন্দিরটি ভগবান শিবের উদ্দেশ্যে নিবেদিত। ১৬৯৪ সালে আহোম রাজা গদাধর সিংহ এই মন্দিরটি নির্মাণ করেন। যদিও পরে একটি ভূমিকম্পের কারণে এটি ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত হয়, ব্রিটিশ আমলে পুনরায় মন্দিরটির সংস্কার করা হয়। উমানন্দ মন্দিরের নামকরণ শিব এবং পার্বতীর মিথ থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। পুরাণ মতে, ভগবান শিব তার স্ত্রী পার্বতীকে আনন্দ দিতে এই স্থানটি বেছে নেন এবং এখানেই ধ্যানমগ্ন হন। তাই এর নাম রাখা হয়েছে "উমানন্দ," যার মানে "পার্বতীর আনন্দ"। শিব এখানে উমা (পার্বতী) এর সাথে আনন্দ করে ধ্যানমগ্ন ছিলেন বলে এই স্থানটি ধর্মীয় দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। মন্দিরে পৌঁছাতে হলে গৌহাটি শহর থেকে নৌকাযোগে যেতে হয়। প্রতি বছর শিবরাত্রির সময় এই মন্দিরে ভক্তদের বিশাল সমাগম হয়।
