Encores Extra with Kevin Grunill on Clayhall Compton

For a weekly dose of cinema organ music, visit organistencores.co.uk Kevin Grunill plays Lullaby of The Leaves was composed by Bernice Petkere and lyricist Joe Young. It is a Tin Pan Alley song first performed in 1932 and is considered a jazz standard. The Clayhall Compton was originally installed in the Ritz, Nuneaton and opened in 1937. The 3 manual 7 ranks (6 unit) plus Melotone was designed by Harold Ramsay and has the following ranks; Tromba, Krummet, Tibia (Wooden), Diapason, Strings (II Ranks) and Flute. In the late 60’s the Compton was taken off the maintenance list and subsequently was sold. The buyer was a Father Kerr. He and a team installed the organ in St John Vianney Church, Clayhall, Essex. This magnificent high building with its frame being made entirely of concrete and glass meant the Compton had a huge reverberant acoustic. The cambers were constructed high on the balcony along with the console. The whole job (including purchase and installation) cost just £500 and it was ‘opened’ in the church in 1968. Little work was done on the Compton until the Cinema Organ Society stepped in during the 1980’s. Since then they have been been responsible for the maintenance of the organ - including a recent makeover! This video was recorded on a GoPro H4 and the audio on a Zoom H2N. Recorded and edited by Damon Cox. Thanks to Kevin Grunill and the Cinema Organ Society for their permission to make this video public.
