Boghos Gelalian, one of Lebanon’s most prominent composers, lived in a part of Beirut that was under constant bombardment for many years. In spite of this he managed to write Quatre Jeux for me in 1979 and I have played it in many countries. I believe I gave the world premiere in Beirut at AUB Assembly Hall around 1982 in Beirut, just before the Israeli siege. This recording is from my CD titled ‘Wandering Winds’ (Nimbus Alliance Label), recorded St George’s Brandon Hill in 1997. Boghos was a very quiet man…but when he talked (always gently, shyly and with a twinkle of mischief in his eyes) – you listened. He wasn’t into fluff and wasn’t into the politics of our imploding country and the politics of the conservatoire. He was a reclusive man of deep integrity and he a night-owl who stayed up late into the night, writing his emotive music. Quatre Jeux weaves a tapestry of moods out of a very simple motive which appears at the very beginning of the piece, without an introduction. Arabic/Armenian modes and moods are the spiritual/cultural DNA of this reflective solo flute piece, which stands on the meeting point between Silence/Sound, Orient/Occident, Past/Present and Nay/Western Flute.” Wissam BOUSTANY
