Citations are instances of your business' NAP occurring throughout the internet. NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. The more citations, instances your NAP shows up through the internet, the more trust Google will have that indeed your business name, address, and phone number are what is showing up. When we are talking about local citations, they are citations for local businesses and specifically within that local area. These citations show more relevance because they occur on websites confirmed to be in the same geographic area. When we're trying to rank for a local search term such as "Roofers in Denver" because our citations/ business/ website are associated with companies in that area it gives you an extra boost. For all of my local business websites, I create 100 local citations. Many businesses operating in a hyper-localized manner do not take advantage of citations and therefore 100 is usually more than enough.
