How Synthesizers Work (part 1)

This video is part 1 of a miniseries that attempts to describe the basic features of synthesizers, making them accessible to beginners or laymen, whether they just want to play around, explore, do sound design, produce tracks or beats, or transition from a traditional instrument into electronic synths for stage performance and recording. This channel is rapidly rotating through content types the next few weeks (between actual music and education). Subscribe and check out the community posts for more info! Looking for music where I use some of this gear? Check out the music videos on my channel! The hottest latest music video was here:    • Aquatic Ambience (Donkey Kong Country...   The first episode was here:    • What is a synthesizer?   0:00 Intro and recap of the first episode 0:26 Overview of features covered through this series 0:33 What is the difference between analog and digital synthesizers? 0:39 What is the brief history behind analog and digital synthesizers? 1:00 Who are the main manufacturers of synthesizers? 1:29 What is the sound difference between analog and digital synthesizers? 2:00 What are synth oscillators? 2:09 What are common oscillator waveforms? 2:30 What do the insides of simple analog and digital synths look like? 3:03 What are synth voices? 3:19 How do synth voices relate to "voices" in classical music history? 4:14 What is paraphony? 4:59 How to get the total number of oscillators on a synth 5:20 What is an ADSR envelope? This series will have 2 more parts on how synths work and conclude with an episode on "how to buy a synthesizer" in a few weeks just in time for the holiday season! This video contains all original music (or interpretations) and sound effects performed/arranged by me (except the Drumlogue track was built on a preset): Chopin Nocturne in F# major Bach Prelude in C major Bach Fugue in C major Original tracks and beats The following synths were used in this video: Yamaha Reface CS Moog Werkstatt-01 Korg NTS-1 ASM Hydrasynth Explorer Uno Synth Pro Korg Minilogue XD Elektron Syntakt Arturia Microfreak ***addendum: 1. Comparing synthesis types like additive, subtractive, FM, granular, modular, etc. Was omitted because this goes a bit beyond the beginner level. For the most part all of these features that will be covered in the series apply almost entirely to subtractive and in many cases to all the others. 2. Usually an envelope can be applied to the filter in addition to amplitude for more fully featured synths. This was not mentioned because the concept of a filter will be covered in part 2. 3. The beginning at 1:00 shows most of the main manufacturers that are active today after synthesizers were created. This may be confused with them all being contributors to the analog space (since digital was mentioned right after... I admit the wording could have been improved here.) Notably, ASM and Modal Electronics are the more recently formed digital synth manufacturers, and very good at what they do too, imo. (Modal had a high-end hybrid "Modal 002" but now focuses on digital) 4. Also, though the way it was stated in the video almost implies it was the first one of its kind, the Yamaha DX7 POPULARIZED digital synths. #yamaha #moog #korg #hydrasynth #ikmultimedia #elektron #arturia #synth #synthesizer #howstuffworks #classicalmusic #piano #sounddesign #music #musicproduction #artist
