One of Jennifer’s Liverpool relations is getting married, she has already made the decision that James needn’t go but then her Aunt Pauline makes it very plain she expects him to make an appearance. He has already made arrangements to take Aunt Helen to a different social engagement and it causes a bit of bad feeling but James knows he has to go with Jennifer. (Plot spoilers from here) This is James’ first opportunity to visit Jennifer’s home turf and he and his new father-in-law lock horns over the fact that Charlie is refusing to attend his niece’s wedding because he disapproves of the match. Jennifer also gets very upset with James over what she sees as his condescending treatment of her father. Interestingly whilst Helen seems to be getting on very well with Jennifer she is not above making cutting remarks about her background when Jennifer is not around. Sara Clee, who plays Jenny’s niece Jill, had her best role a couple of years later as one of the teenage leads in drama series The Siege of Golden Hill.
