In this Two-Minute Science Video, Dr. Cimbala looks at three ways people have suggested to keep bananas from ripening too fast: (1) Putting them in the refrigerator (2) Tie their stems with plastic (3) Seal them in a plastic bag He performs scientific experiments for all three and shows the results. (1) Putting bananas in the refrigerator DOES keep them fresh longer. The peel gets really dark and ugly though. (2) Tying the banana stems in plastic didn't seem to affect anything. (3) Sealing them in a bag made them appear greener and less ripe, but inside they got mushy compared to the ones outside the bag.
