Jamia Millia Islamia, Called 'Anti-National', Tops Govt Ranking of Central Varsities | The Wire

Correction: The date the police entered the Jamia campus was December 15, 2019. Jamia Millia Islamia University has ranked first in the list of Central universities released by the Ministry of Education. Jamia beat JNU and Aligarh Muslim University to top the list of 40 Central varsities. The rank was awarded to the university based on certain parameters like the range of diversity among students and the number of students admitted annually in different programs. The parameters also included aspects like faculty-quality and student-teacher ratio. Last year, in the month of December, Jamia Millia Islamia had been at the receiving end of mud-slinging by leading TV news channels for its participation in the anti-CAA agitation. On December 15, 2019, the police entered the campus, fired tear-gas shells and baton-charged students sitting in the library, claiming that the perpetrators of violence in the city, which followed after the burning of a DTC bus, were present among students in the library. But the police’s claims were not backed by proof. The Vice-Chancellor told the media that the police entered the campus without permission and used unrestrained force against students. As of today, some students from the university are accused of triggering riots in North East Delhi and are in jail. Several human-rights activists and lawyers have called it false incarceration and demanded their release. Like our work?
