Lecture date: 1995-12-07 The winner of the Alvar Aalto medal in 1992, Australian architect Glenn Murcutt has fashioned an architecture that is remarkably consistent, unusual in character and yet curiously familiar. His buildings, principally residential, are a harmonious blend of modernist sensibility, local craftsmanship, indigenous structures and respect for nature. After a period of involvement with the so-called Sydney School in the 1960s, Murcutt established his one-man studio in 1969. Since then he has evolved an architecture which blends modern typology with traditional Australian models to arrive at an ecological functionalism.
