High uric acid is a condition termed as gout. It can be physiological in certain instances in people who consume high protein diet, in alcoholic patients. Sometimes it reaches very high levels in depositing these uric acid crystal levels in various joints. It can result in acute gout which is experienced as severe excruciating pain in all major and minor joints of the body. It can be treated in 2 ways, by symptomatic treatment and curative treatment. The symptomatic treatment is by usually by using regular pain killers. They need not be used for long periods of time. They need to be used only for shorter periods of time to get symptomatic relief. The next treatment is to prevent these attacks from occurring regularly. We need to understand the physiological basis of uric acid production. The treatment we use is drugs that we use to reduce the uric acid production or drugs which help in reducing the uric acid deposits on the body. Based on the patient’s condition and the frequency of symptoms and the recurrence of symptoms, the uric acid, the treatment usually lasts between 3 months to 6 months. It is always necessary to consult the treating doctor on either increasing the dosage of the drugs or reducing the dosage of the drugs and never ever attempt self-treatment because it can have long term implications of this disease.
