Premiered at the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti, MI on September 4th, 2024 Jose Gurria-Cardenas Composer Jose Gurria-Cardenas holds a DMA in Jazz Studies from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California (USC) where he studied composition with Morten Lauridsen, Veronika Krausas, and Vince Mendoza. Gurria-Cárdenas’ many projects have taken him to every continent. As drummer/percussionist, José Gurria-Cárdenas has played with Don Byron, Abraham Laboriel, Bill Watrous, Peter Erskine, Vardan Ovsepian, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Justo Almario, among others. In 2016, Gurria-Cárdenas’ piece Constant Deprivation of Monetary Funds (The Beast), represented México and competed at the International Rostrum of Composers, in Wroclaw, Poland. In 2017 Gurria-Cárdenas was recognized with a gold medal from the Global Music Awards for his work with Gurrisonic Orchestra. In 2021, Gurria-Cárdenas won the Sistema Nacional de Creadores, the most sought-after grant awarded to artists in México. Gurria-Cárdenas’ music has been played/commissioned by Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Campeche, Angel City Jazz Festival, Los Angeles Jazz Society, Arturo O’farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Gurrisonic Orchestra, and US. “President’s Own” Marine Band, among many other ensembles of note. Gurria-Cárdenas maintains a busy schedule teaching his online Composition, Creativity, and Processes Seminar with hundreds of graduated students from all around the world and having as sitting guests artists like Vijay Iyer, Sheila Jordan, Anne Lebaron, Miles Okazaki, Daniel Rosenboom, Ingrid Laubrock, and Jim McNeely, among many others. Jose Gurria-Cárdenas is sponsored by Remo Drumheads and Sabian Cymbals, is a voting member of both NARAS, and LARAS, and is available for commissions, residencies, master classes, clinics, and pre- and post-concert lectures.
