The enlargement of the testis can be because of a number of reasons. The testis is small gland. It is also surrounded by some coverings. So if there is a swelling in the testicles or if there is any accumulation of fluid in the surrounding coverings, then both things looks like a swelling in the testicles. The most common cause for the swelling in the testicles is infection, is called as epididymo orchitis. The enlargement can also be because of sudden acute, events like something called as torsion of testis. This is a medical emergency where the testis rotates on its axis and causes swelling in the testis, sever pain and fever. If that happens, then immediately has to consult any emergency doctor or rarely the swelling in the testis can be because of the testicular cancer or swelling can be because of the fluid accumulation in the coverings of the testicles. Usually it is called as hydrocele. If the fluid is accumulated in the coverings and it is quite tense, the it looks like a swelling in the testicles, usually when we do an ultrasound, we can differentiate between whether it is a swelling in the testicles or the swelling is because of fluid accumulation.
