GERMANIC: OLD ENGLISH & FRISIAN

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, was the earliest form of the English language, spoken in England and southern and eastern Scotland during the early Middle Ages. It originated from the languages brought by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the mid-5th century, with the first literary works appearing in the mid-7th century. The Norman Conquest of 1066 led to Anglo-Norman (a type of French) replacing English among the upper classes. This marked the end of the Old English era, as the language evolved into Middle English in England and Early Scots in Scotland due to significant influence from Anglo-Norman. The Frisian languages are a group of closely related West Germanic languages spoken by around 400,000 Frisian people in the Netherlands and Germany. They are the closest living languages to the Anglic languages, forming the Anglo-Frisian languages group along with the Low German dialects, which together constitute the North Sea Germanic languages. Despite their close historical relationship, modern English and Frisian are not mutually intelligible, nor are the different Frisian languages mutually intelligible due to independent linguistic developments and contact with neighboring languages. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
