Erev Shabbat | VaYelech: And He Went

Join us for our Erev Shabbat service we will be going through the weekly teachings from Monte Judah. This portion is a small portion, just Chapter 31. The title VaYelech means "and he went." This is the conclusion of Moses’ life before he went to die: “I am one hundred and twenty years old today,” he says to the people, “and I can no longer go forth and come in.” He transfers the leadership to Joshua, and writes (or concludes writing, perhaps with Joshua's help) the Torah in a scroll which he entrusts to the Levites for safekeeping in the Ark of the Covenant. Moses offers two final statements: ‘be strong and courageous’ and a reminder that the LORD will never fail us or forsake us. Then he gives one final instruction: to keep the Feast of Tabernacles and to read the Torah directly to the people. The stage is then set for the second Song of Moses, which follows in Chapter 32.
