When you want to know the path a packet's going to take through the network, Trace Route reveals it, one hop at a time. But what's happening behind the scenes of Trace Route is even more interesting than the path it reveals. The magic of Trace Route depends on the time to live (TTL) mechanism: TTL is a simple tool that helps prevent loops on a network by instructing each router, as it receives a packet, how many relays that packet has left before it has to get killed. A router decrements a packet's TTL by one before passing it on, and if a router receives a packet with TTL of one, it stops the relay and sends an error message to the originator. A Trace Route takes advantage of that by sending packets with short TTLs and monitoring where the error messages come from.
