Hooke's Law Explained - Physics Formula and Example Problem

Learn what Hooke's Law actually means and the physics formula behind it to solve spring extension problems. When a spring is pulled by a force, the EXTENSION is directly proportional to the FORCE applied. This is called Hooke's Law (after Robert Hooke, a contemporary to Sir Isaac Newton). The formula for Hooke's Law is: Force applied (in newtons) = Spring stiffness x Extension If the extension is measured in cm, then spring stiffness (sometimes called the spring constant) will be measured in units of N/mm.
