"To Hell or Connacht*" - Even wealthy merchants fell foul of Cromwell - this is one story .

*Ireland has four provinces; Leinster (East), Ulster (North), Munster(South) and Connacht (Irish) or Connaught (English) is in the West of Ireland, where many parts were considered poor for farming etc. Rothe House is a restored late 16th-century merchant's townhouse complex located in the city of Kilkenny. The complex was built between 1594–1610 and is made up of three houses, three enclosed courtyards, and a large reconstructed garden with orchard. The Rothes were thought to have been involved with the Confederation of Kilkenny; formed as a provisional government to protect the Catholic religion. For this they would pay, when Oliver Cromwell would seek revenge on the Irish for their support of the Royalists during the English civil war. The house is the only remaining example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland and considered to be nationally significant because of the range of original post-medieval features that survive. The property is owned by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society and acts as a museum, which is open to the public. The garden to the rear of the house has been reconstructed to reflect a typical 17th-century garden. Kilkenny's medieval city wall forms part of the House complex. #kilkenny #cromwell #rothehouse Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland. This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about their "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe. I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.
