Reflections on the Past, Present and Future Use of Native Plants in the Landscape - Bill Schneider

Bill Schneider, founder and owner of Wildtype Native Plants Nursery in Mason, Michigan specializes in growing plants native to Michigan from Michigan wild-gathered seed. The name of his nursery, Wildtype, borrowed from the genetic term “wild type,” reflects both the objective of Bill’s nursery operation and his concern about the future of native-plant nurseries. “My idea,” Bill emphasizes, “was to produce native plants with enough genetic diversity to produce self-sustaining populations; or, in other words, to conserve not only the species but the genetic diversity found in the wild population.” This, for Bill, requires wild collection of seed. The great majority of the more than 300 species of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, and emergent wetland plants Bill grows on his 10-acre nursery are from wild seed stock and have not been bred or selected for uniformity. They are, therefore, “borne to be wild.” The future of such an operation as Wildtype is faced with many uncertainties. Development, spread of invasive species, and climate change all contribute to the dwindling of native seed sources and narrowing of genetic variability. They pose an increasing threat to the ability to continue propagating plants capable of sustaining themselves in our quickly changing landscapes and climates. Changes in the market and changes in the landscape will affect the choices available to Bill, and to all of us. In his 25 years of experience, Bill has made over 10,000 collections of more than 450 species of native plants throughout the state of Michigan. He will share his concerns about the future of native-plant nurseries such as Wildtype as well as about the future of Michigan’s natural landscapes and our efforts to “naturalize” our cities and suburbs. October 27, 2021 presentation to Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones, Kalamazoo, MI
