In this video I will demonstrate how dyes can be used to make small color adjustments when mixed with a sanding sealer coat. Let’s say in the field you’ve applied a coat of dye to an entire kitchen and once it dries, the client would like it to be slightly more red. Rather than spend an extra day applying a second dye coat and wait an extra day for it to dry, one option is to use Transtint dyes mixed with a clear universal sealer in order to achieve the desired color. At the end we will compare our dyed sapele sample with the alder sample we stained in the previous video. When given the choice between stains and dyes, for me, dyes win every time because of the clarity of color they produce. Dye Formula: 1/4t. Transfast Powdered Dye (Light Oak) 1/4t. Transfast Powdered Dye (Dark Mission Brown) 4oz - Hot Distilled Water to Dissolve 4oz - Room Temp Distilled Water to Cool Sealer Coat: 2oz Zinsser Universal Sanding Sealer (Wax-Free Clear Shellac) 1 pinch Transtint Dye (Bright Red) Finish: Lacquer of your choosing
