In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, built in the 1950s on the Krishna River between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, submerged the ancient city of Vijayapuri. This city was the capital of the Ikshvaku dynasty, which ruled the region from approximately 225-325 CE. Archaeological excavations revealed that Vijayapuri was a well-planned city with a fort, residential buildings, water tanks, and a sophisticated drainage system. It had an amphitheatre possibly inspired by Roman architecture. Artefacts found included Roman coins, Greek wine vessels, and a pillar with a Roman deity, suggesting trade links with the Roman Empire. The Ikshvaku rulers were Shaivites who also supported Buddhism. The city had 18 Hindu temples and over 30 Buddhist monasteries and stupas. In 1954, archaeologists raced to excavate the site before the dam's construction. While many artefacts were recovered, a significant portion of this historical treasure now lies submerged under the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir. खबरों को विस्तार से पढ़ने के लिए क्लिक करे यहां- https://www.thelallantop.com/ Instagram: / thelallantop Facebook: / thelallantop Twitter: / thelallantop Produced By: The Lallantop Edited By: Alok Sahu
