Why didn't Emma Smith go west with the Saints?

A couple of years after the murder of Joseph Smith, most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled west. Some people might be surprised to hear that Joseph’s first wife, Emma, stayed behind — a decision that caused some drama over the years. In this episode, David explores some of the reasons why Emma stayed behind. In Jan. 1850, when Emma heard news of his safe arrival, she wrote, “My dear Lewis you cannot realize how thankful I was when I learned that you had got from the Bluffs safe and did not go by the valley.” (Enigma, pg. 254) In the same letter she warned Lewis, “It may seem strange and ungrateful to you that they should even wish you harmed, and so it is, but I can tell you they are capable of an infamous ingratitude as any other beings.” When Lewis apparently happened upon some Latter-day Saints on his journey, they asked him to bring Emma and the kids to the valley. He declined. Emma wrote, “I think you man[a]ged very prudently.” — “Emma Smith began promoting [William] Marks as the new church president a week after the martyrdom. Both had opposed Joseph Smith’s plural marriages. Her personal reason for supporting Marks as church president was to guarantee that her orphaned children would grow up in a church that was publicly and privately monogamous.” Source: “The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power,” by D. Michael Quinn, pg. 159. — “Emma Smith, the widow of the Prophet, is said to have maintained to her dying moments that her husband had nothing to do with the patriarchal order of marriage, but that it was Brigham Young that got that up. I bear record before God, angels and men that Joseph Smith received that revelation; and I bear record that Emma Smith gave her husband in marriage several women while he was living, some of whom are today living in this city, and some may be present in this congregation, and who, if called upon, would confirm my words. But lo and behold, we hear of publication after publication nowadays, declaring that Joseph Smith had nothing to do with these things.” Source: Journal of Discourses, vol. 23:131, discours by Apostle Wilford Woodruff, delivered in the Tabernacle, SLC, May 14, 1882.
