As a continuation of that story, we have prepared another, very interesting story about the development of the Spanish High-Speed Rail system. Just as the French high-speed railway is special in its interoperability with the conventional railway network and is exclusively dedicated to passenger traffic, or as the German high-speed rail is developed to accommodate mixed traffic, the Spanish HSR also has its own specifics. For example, just like the conventional rail network, Spanish HSR was developed radially, with the starting point and the center located in Madrid. The main goal behind the development of this network was to make the travel time from Madrid to all provincial cities less than four hours. It is not interoperable with the conventional rail network, as is the case with the LGVs in France, due to the simple fact that the Spanish conventional railway network was built to Iberian gauge, while the Normal gauge was chosen for the high-speed network. Another characteristic is that the Spanish high-speed rail utilizes several different rolling stock technologies! With Alstom TGV, Siemens Velaro ICE, Bombardier, together with Spanish CAF and Talgo, this “open architecture” of the Spanish HSR is quite different from the approach of many countries where the infrastructure is designed to work with only one, or at least specific type of manufacturer. In addition to all these aspects, in this video, we also tried to present the development of the high-speed rail network of Spain, line by line, starting with Madrid – Seville in 1992. In the end, as usual, we discussed the effects of introducing HSR services in Spain, including the facts and figures and the market effects of AVE, ALVIA, and AVANT services.
