"The Eighth of January," played on fiddle by Violet Hensley (b. 1916) at her home in Yellville, Arkansas, in 2002. She's backed up by Tom Sauber on banjo and Alice Gerrard on guitar. Violet learned to play from her father and "uncle" Jim Petit (no relation) when she was a child, but gave it up when she married at 18. She didn't take it up again until she was in middle age. Violet, still fiddling today at the age of 103, has a style and sound that is classic Arkansas. Linda and I first became friends with her around 1982, but my best recordings of her were on this 2002 visit by Tom, Brad & Alice. The photo, by Linda Higginbotham, is actually from an early visit by Linda and me in 1985 -- but Violet, one of the most energetic and vital peole we've ever known, never seems to age!
