The sand pendulum that traces out patterns has always been a popular device in my classroom. After building and trying the basic piece, here are some additional variations that have been suggested for its use. Using a magnetic sheet and having the pendulum drop iron filings instead of sand traces out a pattern with more detail than using sand. Paint can also be used to replace the sand to make the patterns more permanent, use spray adhesive and make the pattern into a poster
