While the Manchester City players had been busy dribbling the ball towards the net, its Abu Dhabi-based owners had been struggling similarly to conceal their corrupt acts. Over the years, City has gradually advanced to be among the top-level, successful clubs. Meanwhile, it had also been engulfed in investigations over its financial dealings. In February 2023, Man City was accused of breaching plenty of financial rules, after an intensive investigation of 4 years by the Premier League. Between 2009-2018, the club allegedly violated the league’s rules on over 100 occasions. Premier league accused City of failing to provide accurate financial information, “that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”. Other alleged offences included: Failure to disclose details of remuneration to managers and players between 2009-13 (Roberto Mancini) Failure to comply with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules between 2015-18 Failure to abide by UEFA regulations between 2013-18, and Failure to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation from December 2018 till 2023 In 2008, Man City was acquired by Abu Dhabi’s wealthy and powerful men, Mansour bin Zayed and Khaldoon al Mubarak. The allegations on the club have been as per the operations under these owners. Premier League referred the case against City to an independent commission, which were to be heard in a confidential hearing. The consequences that Man City could face, if the allegations will be upheld, were unclear. The teams that breach Premier League’s rules could face sanctions, including fines, reprimands, points deductions in the standings, or even expulsion from the top division. Currently, City is chasing its 5th Premier League title in 6 years, standing 2nd in the season. In 2020, the club acutely escaped the Champions League ban, after appealing it. The ban was overturned because UEFA took long to investigate the offences. But, the Premier League is not bounded by its disciplinary regulations.
