When can a doctor know whether I have an incompetent cervix or not?

You had some questions about an incompetent cervix, or a cervix that opens up way too early in the pregnancy, and can lead to pregnancy loss. And for someone who's had a history of this, of course when you get pregnant in the future, your doctor is going to watch you closely and there may be interventions that can help to prevent that form happening again. Sometimes this involves medications, and then it usually also involves monitoring, and you can actually see if the cervix is funneling or shortening on ultrasound. And some doctors will recommend serial ultrasounds every 2 weeks between like 16 and 26-ish weeks to watch the cervix and to see if it's actually shortening, and if it shortens too much, then sometimes intervention is warranted, like a cerclage, or a stitch in the cervix to help hold it shut. Now medications, and cerclages, and ultrasounds aren't right for everyone, and it really just depends on the woman's history and circumstances, and the need to do these things is determined by a doctor based on their knowledge of what's been going on with the woman in her past and current pregnancies. So if you have specific questions about what might be warranted for you, talk with your doctor, and they'll tell you what they think is best. Typically speaking, if a woman has gotten to 26 to 28 weeks without having much cervical shortening, then that's a good thing, and going forward, she can breathe a little sigh of relief and hope that her risk for preterm labor is decreased. And also, making it to 28 weeks is a huge milestone. 24 weeks is the age of viability, or the point at which a baby can be resuscitated if they were to be born prematurely. But with each passing day, each passing week, each passing month, the baby's ability to survive and thrive outside of the womb increases, and so of course you want to go as far as you can in the pregnancy. I hope the very best for you, and if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at   / intermountainmoms  , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
