Let me explain what is a fistula. Fistula is one of the most cumbersome and difficult disease to treat in the proctology department, whereas piles and fissures are much simpler because fistulas are infective conditions. There is something called as anal glands in the wall of the anal canals which will be secreting some secretions into the anal canal. Soemtmes they get infected, then it forms pus and pus starts coming out through holes outside or from inside and then these are called as fistulas. So fistulas are small tracts with two openings, one outside and one inside the anal canal. They are called as fistulas. Fistulas are difficult to treat as they are infective conditions, even if you curette, there is possibility of getting infected somewhere else. The other problems in fistulas are there are two varieties, one is called as simple fistulas, the other is called as complex fistulas. Simple fistulas are usually they do not recur whereas complex fistulas, there is chance that they recur. So to prevent the recurrence and to prevent the damage while doing the surgery through the sphincters where the mechanism that will keep the anal canal closed. We have developed different varieties of treatment for individual fistulas. There are many varieties of surgeries but the basic principle remains that the tract be remained clear of all the infective material and it should not recur again. So there are different varieties secluding laser treatment. So that is how lasers are useful in fistula and because the lasers are very precise, the damage to the other tissues are less. So wound healing is faster, bleeding is almost nil and post operative pain, recovery time is much better compared to regular surgeries.
