As the flyover construction was affected for almost six months due to the changes in the design, the progress of this vital construction project in the country's federal capital is limited to 45 percent after 13 months since its construction began. The Quality Research and Development Center (QRDC), a non-profit organization which was established by a group of community development practitioners and human rights activists in 2003 with an aim to contribute to the reconstruction and development of the country, claims that the construction of the Gwarko flyover will be completed within the next five months, i.e. by mid-June. Rakesh Maharjan, senior divisional engineer of the QRDC, claimed that although the work of the Gwarko flyover was affected due to technical problems in the past, the construction work has now been expedited. He said, “Now, more than 60 workers are working on the flyover construction on a daily basis.” After the contract of the flyover was awarded, the work was halted for some time due to technical problems in the design. M/S Ashish Samanantar JV, which was given the task of construction, submitted a proposal to reconsider the design of the flyover. The construction work of the flyover has started to pick up pace after the Department of Roads (DoR) approved the design presented by the contractor on August 27. Senior Divisional Engineer Maharjan said that the progress of the flyover will reach 70 percent with the placing of the beam structure. “If there are no obstacles in the road section, it seems that it will be completed by mid-June,” he said. The main length of the flyover will be 35 meters long. Similarly, a 320 meter long access road will be built towards Koteshwor-Balkumari and 185 meters long towards Gwarko. There will be a total of 540 meters of access road in all three directions. Senior Divisional Engineer Maharjan said that preparations are being made to proceed with the work of connecting the flyover ramps and other structures by bringing the necessary technicians from India. Flyovers are to be constructed in three congested areas between Koteshwar and Kalanki under the Ring Road expansion project. As per the plan, the first flyover is being constructed at Gwarko Chowk. The six-meter high flyover will be constructed as per the international standards. The total length of the flyover will be 455 meters and the ground clearance will be six meters. The construction of the Gwarko flyover is expected to ease vehicular movement along the Satdobato-Koteshwar road section of the ring road and the Mangal bazar-Imadol-Lubhu road section. The construction of the Gwarko flyover started on February 24, 2022. This flyover is being constructed under the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) model. The government has awarded the contract worth Rs Rs 176.88 million for the construction of the four-lane flyover in Gwarko, Lalitpur to M/S Ashish Samanantar JV. The construction company is required to maintain the flyover for five years after completion.
