Canadian Club 43 Year “The Speakeasy” Whisky

Today we have (mostly) a very old whisky to review! The “mostly” is because this Canadian Club 43 Year “The Speakeasy” does have a touch of 11-year-old rye whiskey in it. But don’t worry, it’s not enough to take away from the beauty of its age. To create this special 2021 release, they began with 43-year-old whisky created using 100% corn. Over the years, they’ve kept consolidating the barrels (essentially “topping off” the barrels with others of the same age) to minimize evaporation and preserve the whisky for all these years. Once it was time to bottle, they probably just used enough rye whiskey (by law it has to be below 9.09%) to revive the spice component. Now “The Speakeasy” name pays homage to all the underground establishments that dotted the US landscape during prohibition. And since Canadian Club was one of the most bootlegged spirits out of Canada during that time, it seems like a fitting tribute. Retail pricing for this 90 proof whisky hovers around $300-$350, but if you’re lucky and find them on closeout (as I did), you might get a much better deal.
